Beauty and Grace is set in the mid- to late-1800′s. You can determine the date this is set by the woman’s abalone shell earring. There is little water in the Ute tribal homeland, so shell accoutrements would have been obtained through trade during this time period.
The composition allows you to focus on the young Ute woman’s beauty. Ayers’ use of chiaroscuro, or dramatic contrasts with light, highlights the lovely, strong structure of her face.
